Google Passkeys Chris Coyier

Just a quick note that if you’ve never tried Passkeys and you use Google stuff, you can set it up easily at:

g.co/passkeys

I did it a few months back, and it’s been pretty nice.

Have you used a password thingy like 1Password? If you have, you know how when you log into a site, it auths you first, with a face ID or with the master password, then it fills in the username/password. I find Passkeys a lot like that experience, except you skip the second part. There is no autofill, you’re just in. That’s nice as I find there to be about a 30% chance that something goes wrong with the autofill. Maybe it’s as simple as the mental overhead of having to choose between a list of logins relevant for that site, or as bad as it being wrong and needing to through the rigamarole of both resetting the password as well as updating 1Password.

I will say it doesn’t feel quite as secure as using 1Password on desktop specifically. Here’s what it’s like using a Passkey on Desktop Chrome.

Step 1)

Step 2)

So I guess Step 2 there is a “screen lock”? There is no bio auth on desktop Chrome. You just click OK and you’re in. It’s easy, but literally anybody could walk up to my desk and do that if my computer was unlocked. I do have my desktop computer behind a password of course, but that’s only if it’s turned off, sleeping, or the screen saver has kicked on. So I guess just being logged into the computer is “auth enough” for Passkeys. Something to be cognizant of.
