James Morrison's wife dies a decade after singer's tragic triple family heartbreak

James Morrison’s wife Gill Catchpole was found dead in her home on Friday. The news comes 10 years after the passing of three of his family members.

James Morrison has been flooded with messages of support after the music star’s wife of 20 years, Gill Catchpole, was found dead in her Whitminster, Gloucester home on Friday, January 5, 2024. She was just 45. Her passing was discovered at around 9.10am after police responded to welfare concerns, Gloucestershire Constabulary announced.

James Morrison’s wife Gill Catchpole had kidney transplant before death

The celebrity singer, 39, met Catchpole about two decades after she moved into his mother’s house as a lodger. He recalled their first encounter as a “fairytale” and tried to impress her by serenading her with Stevie Wonder songs.

The couple share two daughters, Elsie, 15, and Ava, 5, but their family life is always kept private from James’ Instagram.

Catchpole’s death comes over one year after she had a kidney transplant in November 2022. She celebrated the surgery’s first anniversary in a post on her catering business Facebook page, Cotswold Sandwich Box.

“What a difference a year makes,” she wrote. “This time last year I was having my kidney transplant and a year on after many ups downs and heartache I am here owning my own business. At the start of this year, I myself never saw this coming.”

The small café launched in October 2023.

Morrison lost three family members within three years

Tragedy struck Morrison’s family in 2010 with the death of his father, Paul, in 2010, following a heart attack. According to The Mirror, he was found dead in his council flat. Paramedics at the scene noted there were “hundreds of empty beer cans.”

Paul Morrison, described as an alcoholic by his singer-songwriter son, collapsed while walking back from shops earlier with cans of beer. He was 60 years old.

By 2013, James also suffered the deaths of his older brother Alexis, 43, and his nephew, Callum, age 21, who died one year later.

“After my Dad died, it was heartbreaking to start losing the next generations,” he told Daily Mail. Morrison had joyful memories of his father and shared a close relationship after Paul split from James’ mom, Suzy. The Brit Award-winning artist was on tour the day his father died and left his phone in the recording studio the night before, meaning he missed countless missed calls from Paul.
