Francis Bean Cobain, the daughter of Kurt Cobain, suffered a near-death experience when onboard an Air France flight after one of the engines failed.
The flight was meant to take its passengers from Paris to Los Angeles but had to land in Canada after the engine failure caused one of the aircraft’s wings to burst into flames. When she turned 30 last year, Kurt Cobain’s daughter Francis recalled the near-death experience and said it had made her want to live life to the fullest and gave her “gratitude” for life.
Kurt Cobain’s daughter Francis Bean opens up over near-death experience

Francis, whose mom is music star Courtney Love, was candid on her 30th birthday last year.
She admitted she “wasn’t sure” as a 20-year-old if she would make it to 30. However, her negative outlook on life changed when she was onboard the plane six years ago when it malfunctioned.
The celebrity penned in the lengthy caption: “I made it! Honestly, 20-year-old Frances wasn’t sure that was going to happen.

“At the time, an intrinsic sense of deep self-loathing dictated by insecurity, destructive coping mechanisms & more trauma than my body or brain knew how to handle, informed how I saw myself and the world; through a lens of resentment for being brought into a life that seemingly attracted so much chaos and the kind of pain tied to grief that felt inescapable.
“Then, an event on a plane which brought me closer in proximity to death is ironically the event that catapulted me towards running at this lived experience with radical gratitude. I’m glad to have proven myself wrong & to have found ways to transform pain into knowledge.”
She concluded: “Entering this new decade I hope to stay soft no matter how hardening the world can feel at times, bask in the present moment with reverence, shower the people I am lucky enough to love with more appreciation than words could ever do justice & hold space to keep learning, so the growth never stops.
“I’m happy to be here & I’m happy you’re here too.”
Francis ‘ironically’ wasn’t meant to be on that plane
Francis was onboard the plane when the engine failed. At the time, she shared a now-deleted post saying she was “grateful” to wake up every day following the incident.
In the caption Francis told followers how ‘ironic’ it was she changed her pre-booked flight to get home earlier. Initially, she wasn’t meant to be on that plane.
She wrote: “When I felt the plane tilt, saw the wing directly in front of me catch fire, and basically came to grips with my own mortality I made a deal with myself. I promised myself that if I made it through, that I would no longer try to escape the moments of my life.”
“So I’ve entered the phase of my life where every moment is truly precious,” she added.
“All the mundane “crippling” anxieties I once let dictate how I functioned have dissipated. I was jolted awake and awake is where I need to stay in order to live authentically.”
Air France said at the time: “The regularly trained pilots and cabin crew handled this serious incident perfectly. The passengers are currently being assisted by teams dispatched to the location.”
They added the plane had suffered “serious damage to one of its four engines.”
Daughter finds Father’s Day ‘complicated’ because of Kurt Cobain

Francis’ near-death expierence came 23 years after the death of her dad, Kurt Cobain. The lead singer of Nirvana struggled for many years with drug use and mental health. He killed himself in April 1994 when his daughter was only a year old.
In 2022, Francis opened up about how Father’s Day affects her and said it can leave her feeling “deeply wounded.” She added the day to celebrate dad’s can be “complicated” for her.
In an Instagram Story, she penned: “Today can be complicated for a lot of people. So I just thought I would share my yearly tradition for this day. I try to use whatever energy I’m feeling (sometimes sad, sometimes deeply wounded or lost, but in more recent years curious & compassionate) to bring into the world something that hasn’t previously existed, through some kind of creative outlet.
“I like to believe that if something beautiful can co-exist along side something sad or complicated then that allows room for those emotions to be circulated with intention and meaning.”
Francis concluded: “Sending whatever needs to be sent your way today” and added white love hearts to the post.
